The Tunnel to Nowhere Receives Port Authority Approval
July 26, 2006 |
The port authority voted 5-2 to give the nod to the Tunnel to Nowhere, a $435 million dollar project that will link the north side of the city with the downtown subway rail system.
$435 million is not going to be the last figure. It’s reported that the project — a Federal, State and local project — has already increased its projected costs by $42 million. All for a project in a shrinking city that has more than its share of bridges and buses to cross the river, an already scary tax and business environment, and budget problems a mile wide.
Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership is begging for a tax increase on downtown property to help cover its budget. Yep.. just what’s needed: another reason not to want to own property in the downtown area.
