There is absolutely no logical reason why a home schooled student should not be able to participate in the local government school district’s after-school programs, such as its teams sports. Most districts today allow it, but a the TribReview reports, that’s not always the case.

Meanwhile, the state Senate seems to agree that taxpayers in a community should have the right to as much, even if they reject the education portion of government schools. But Ed Rendell — a big supporter of the Pennsylvania Education Association (PSEA) (aka, the association of unionized teachers) is not so sure he will sign it. He must review the bill to see if the districts affected can afford it. Gee.. Aren’t they collecting taxes from everyone already? Aren’t these home schoolers already saving these districts a bundle by rejecting the education portion of what’s offered?

Most reasons thrown out in defense of preventing participation are related to “not being able to verify eligibility” of homschoolers. On the other hand, allowing access to home schoolers means that parents of top athletes will now consider home schooling alternatives as well.

My guess is this is as much about preventing competition as anything else…. Otherwise, why else force everyone to use government schools, and if so, why not allow parents to choose where their kids get an education to add an element of competitiveness the system sorely needs?

A: Because that would mean the unions would be losing their stranglehold on education.
