Gas Taxes

September 9, 2005 |

The PA Gas tax is $ .30 these days, and Governor Ed Rendell momentarily considered eliminating it after Katrina.

Of all taxes out there, the gas tax is as close to a user fee as you’ll find for motorists who use the road. And who else should be paying for the roads other than those who use them the most?

However, that does not change the fact that politicians doll out highway dollars to the politically connected contractors vs. the best, and that those workers are heavily unionized or they can’t get the contract… making roadwork always more expensive than it would be otherwise.

Plus, there is the simple fact that PA has the worst roads… You’d think in 2005 we’d be able to produce better roads… Even in the midst of the ordinary government garbage, most states can. But not PA. The only real explanation is corner cutting and lack of any incentive to do otherwise due to lazy voters.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 100 times… Democracy is the theory that people deserve to get what they ask for, and good and hard.
