I just learned today on the radio from a Pittsburgh Post Gazette commentary writer that he is not allowed to write his own headlines. That’s not because he isn’t any good at it. It is just forbidden by the Post Gazette union contract. Indeed, a union headline writer is required to write his headlines… or all hell breaks loose.

Heck, if the Three Rivers Post & Standard had to pay for a headline writer, it’d bust our budget lickity split!

Not that I have a problem with someone who writes headlines for a living. Those headlines had just better be worth all that money. Otherwise, I think its nuts that other intelligent human beings are forbidden from writing their own headlines so he has a job. Kind of like having your hand in someone else’s pocket, no?

And we wonder why bloggers and the internet are writing the new chapters in the history of journalism.
