Tale of Two Cities in da Burgh
July 24, 2005 |
Fifth and Forbes gets some coverage in the PG in “Fifth-Forbes, Cultural District offer tale of two Downtowns.” Who can blame all the folks fleeing town and especially the 5th and Forbes area. Between the high taxes that make it unfriendly for consumer and business alike, and the constant drum beat of eminent domain that would cause a newcomer to lose his property (and other investments, as well, including all the retail sweat equity…), who in his right mind would choose 5th and Forbes for private investment?
On the other hand, the Cultural district is the beneficiary of many handouts from the private and government sector, and so long as those last, businesses feeding off the arts will have a comparatively easy time. Although, even they seem to recognize the absurdity of the city system.
Whatever the case, the core rot coming from Grant Street gives us a town that’s only burgeoning trade is entertainment districts and other heavily tax favored industries, such as the hospitals. You’d think the politicians would get the hint: taxes are a large part of what is killing the city.
