Hotel Bullet… Will it Be Dodged?
July 18, 2005 |
The PG is covering the convention center hotel issue... Thankfully Onorato is rethinking plowing government subsidized rooms into an environment that is at 56% occupied vs. a national rate of 70%… Neither the BassMaster Classic nor the Senior Olympics did much to pump up rates, as folks chose to stay in the suburbs (probably avoiding the fat room taxes downtown, but that is speculation on my part… ).
With private development considering investing in additional hotel rooms around the area, including for the new slot parlors, it sure seems like it will be a rough business in which to be profitable.
But when did profit matter to folks whose mode of operation is to blame failings not on the inherent shortfalls of government development, but on not being given enough rope to further hang taxpayers?
UPDATE
A reliable resource, AntiRust has some good thoughts on the issue, along with some good links re: Mayor Murphy’s laughable defense against the NYT piece from last week.
