Wecht Oversight

July 17, 2005 |

I can’t say I had any problems with County Coroner Cyril Wecht doing his digging into the affairs of Pittsburgh area law enforcement. While I’m no fan of criminals (well.. I should say, those who commit non consensual crimes…) and defend police in their intended objective or protecting the public, I am no fan of old boys networks and union cronyism. Frankly, I liked the fact that there was a separation of powers regarding law enforcement in Pittsburgh, even if egos and turf wars caused quite a few toes to be stomped. In the end, it was better to have such checks and balances given that those in law enforcement are as susceptible to human flaws as any other group of individuals, and that they are entrusted with extra power. Its all that more tragic when law enforcement is corrupted, and it should be always reviewed.

All that said, Kudos to the Tribune Review for doing a nice summary of the conflict between Wecht and District Attorney, Zapalla.
