Pittsburgh Still Scaring People Away
June 30, 2005 |
Word from the 2004 census is that Pittsburgh’s population has dropped by 1%, continuing the dismal trend of lousy city policies scaring off residents. That drops the city to #56 in population centers in the US. Granted, Pittsburgh doesn’t have the Florida or Arizona sun, but that’s all the more reason Pennsylvania and its two major cities need to be more consumer and business friendly. Philadelphia remains 5th largest despite losing 1/2% of its population.
So, it can be said that the trend of the shrinking populations of Pittsburgh continue… While the trend of lousy city and state government continues.
Coincidence?
That said, sometimes Pittsburgh folks have lost perspective with regard to the city size we are dealing with. Just for perspective, here is a list of the next ten cities larger than Pittsburgh (ranking #56) and the next 10 smaller than Pittsburgh. Our budgets ought to be more in line with cities of our own demographics instead being larger than cities dramatically larger. (For example, our Pittsburgh City School system is way out of line compared to its peers.)
