The Tunnel to Nowhere…
June 26, 2005 |
So this tunnel from downtown, past the convention center and over to the North Side, and then up past PNC Park to Heinz Field… it is only going to cost $200 million + $100 million + $65 million + $13 million…. Pretty soon you’re talking some real money…. Never mind that most people are happy to walk across any one of the bridges to get to the exact same spots in just a few minutes… and they do it every day…
$378 million is the budget… and that won’t hold. The Trib Review has a good piece summarizing all of this. You should give it a read.
The funny thing is that it’s being billed as good for economic development… as if that couldn’t be spent more productively, or for that matter, if left in the hands of taxpayers, it wouldn’t be spent on things that people actually need, and in turn foster real economic growth instead of a quick boon for the sports venue area real estate holders and those connected to the contractors and the obligatory union jobs….
That’s all activity that will fade out as soon as the paint dries on the “open for service” sign above each new subway stop. If you build it, they will come was proven a fraud in the 1970s with Allegheny Center…
