Slots Racket
June 26, 2005 |
Slot machines are supposed to save the Pittsburgh region from years of financial recklessness. Since nobody has the political will to cut spending for fear of retribution at the ballot box from those at the government trough, most taxpayers footing the bill will be left in the lurches — at least as far as they are currently. But even taxes have a limit that the locals will not tolerate, and so the political powers that be are deciding to get extra revenue through slot machine gambling.
Of course, those playing the slots will be the ones least able to afford losing money given the miserable odds. And most to benefit will be the politically connected big wigs with the connections to win a license for running slot parlors, never mind the fake talk of “competition” for licenses… Only the approved are allowed to compete. Let’s face it, the average joe can’t be trusted to run a slot parlor… and if it were up to the free market, you’d have parlors competing by offering the best odds. But not when gambling is, in effect, a government racket.
Beyond those issues, one has to question if politicians have ever taken a course on economics… gambling does not create wealth. it merely displaces it from someplace else…. And this is supposed to revitalize our region…
All that goes to prove that politicians are experts only at saying whatever it takes to get elected, and little else. Were they in any other profession, they’d be sued for malpractice and be out of business long ago. Maybe that’s why they don’t let us opt out of their lousy programs… If we had true freedom, who in their right mind would pay them for such a lousy product?
But that’s government in a nutshell.
